Peacock Chairs, they are making their comeback and we have found ourselves lusting over them. As they gain in popularity so does the availability of them in retail shops, but wouldn’t you rather get your hands on a vintage? I know I did and found the price tag was much more acceptable. So here are a five tips to find your perfect peacock chair that helped me get my hands on that vintage piece.
1. Google
This seems self explanatory but you can really find some hidden listings just by googling. I ended up finding one on a random selling app that was absolutely perfect, unfortunately the listing was about a year old and the chair was long gone. This, in no way should discourage you from using google though. My timing wasn’t great but that doesn’t mean that it won’t help you hit some luck.
2. Good Will, Salvation Army and Furniture Thrift Stores
These places are the holy grail of finding used items at a great price. Of course there is no guarantee of finding exactly what you are looking for and you shouldn’t go in with hopes of finding what you have in mind. I have done that way too many times, to only leave with disappointment. Go in with adventure in mind and your eyes peeled and you may be pleasantly surprised of what goodies you find along the way. Another little tip, I have found that going during the week if you get time is much easier. It’s less crowded during this time and you don’t have to fight over something you may have an interest in.
3. Estate Sales
I love browsing online for local estate sales. They usually have tones of pictures of what to expect at the sale and detailed descriptions that it’s easy enough to narrow down which ones to go to and which to pass on.
4. eBay
Can’t even tell you how many peacock chairs I found on eBay for such a phenomenal deal. Unfortunately none were in the San Antonio area and the ones that were willing to ship ended up costing more than just going ahead and purchasing one for retail price. So go and check on eBay now, so many listings I wish I could go scoop up, that you may be able to snag.
5. Craigslist
This was the winner for me, I always seem to have really good luck with Craigslist. Personally I love how you can search by your city and even close surrounding areas. This gives you plenty of item options, a way to contact the seller and no more crossing your fingers hoping that the listing is near by. I had luck in this round of searching and found my chair for about $200. So shout out to the lovely man and his wife that let go of this beauty and shared the story behind it. I can say I successfully found the perfect vintage peacock chair that lived in Germany and made it’s way back to the states, to my little home in Texas, kind of cool.
Reminder to please always go with a buddy or let someone know exactly where you are going and who you are going to meet. I have heard way too many horror stories from craigslist meet ups/picks ups. Better safe than sorry.
I hope this helps any thrifters or peacock chair hunters out there that want to start searching. Remember, patience is key, so don’t loss hope when you feel like you aren’t finding any winners. Be persistent and search online every day when you get the chance, you never know when something will pop up.
Happy searching, the thrill is in the hunt and when you find it the excitement will be unreal. Hope to hear some success stories from you all!
Much Love,
Vic
